Estepona imigrants in Hawaii (1911-1913): Aguilar - de Hoyos family

ENGLISH VERSION - GOOGLE TRANSLATE

Starting in 1907, several campaigns to recruit farmers were carried out in Spain and Portugal, especially in Castilla, Extremadura and Andalusia (mainly Málaga and Granada), to work sugar cane in Hawaiian plantations.

Some 8,000 Spanish compatriots responded to these calls with the false promise of a substantial improvement in their living conditions. Part of the contingent was made up of families and citizens of Estepona.

Based on the records available, it is estimated that around 300 people left this town. Many of the participating families were closely related to each other, so we can talk about them moving to Hawaii, or thanks to the trip, authentic groups, family clans were formed. An example of this was formed by the Aguilar - de Hoyos families, the Vílchez brothers and the Caravaca - Infante families.

The family made up of Diego Aguilar Vélez, 50 (born around 1861), and María de Hoyos Jerez, 44 (born 9/24/1867), traveled from Gibraltar to Honolulu in 1911, aboard the S.S. Willesden, accompanied by their children Diego, 20, Isabel, 18, Sebastián, 12, Francisco, 8, and Ildefonso, 4. They were sent to the sugar plantations in Honomu.

From a family tree of the Valerio, Infante, López, Caravaca, etc. family, found in Ancestry, and from those prepared by Dª Antonia María Aguado, we have that Diego Aguilar Vélez was the son of Diego Aguilar Rodríguez and Agustina Vélez Zaballos; and María de Hoyos Jerez was the daughter of Gerónimo de Hoyos Muñoz and Isabel Jerez Vázquez and granddaughter of Sebastián and Ana on the paternal line and of Miguel Jerez Ramos and Catalina Vázquez Fernández on the maternal line.

It is striking that if we look at the civil registry that is in the Municipal Historical Archive of Estepona, we find a marriage record, dated November 5, 1860, of Diego José de la Cruz, of unknown parents, and Agustina Velez Zaballos, daughter of Juan and Lucia. Both were from Estepona; he was thirty-two years old, and she was 30.

On board the same ship, but on its second voyage, in February 1913, two other children joined: María Dolores (María) and Antonio. He stayed in Estepona because he was too young for the first trip and his sister María stayed with him, at the home of one of his mother's sisters. Joey V. Nardone believes that she was Ana and comments that she went to visit them in Hawaii and when she arrived she felt that something bad had happened to her son. She returned to Estepona and found that her son had died.
